I haven’t been sleeping well recently but it’s not a bad thing as I’m just excited about all of the wonderful things that are finally coming together after a lot of hard work.
I started working on Victory Lap Retirement with Jonathan in early 2015 and it was released in the fall of 2016. It was a good book and I was proud of it but after publishing it I always felt that we missed out on telling the whole story. That always bothered me but thankfully the revision has allowed us to fix that and I can sleep better at night without any regrets.
New Book, New Look
I’m happy to report that the second edition of Victory Lap Retirement is being released this month in Canada and the United States.
In addition to the new color and cover design you will notice that we picked up a new co-author, Rob Morrison, CFP®, along the way. Rob is a practicing financial advisor in the Chicago area and an expert on transitioning into and through retirement. Over time, he noticed a preference for a Glidepath transition out of traditional work situations and into a Victory Lap. Rob has become a passionate advocate of transitional retirement from both a quality of life and financial perspective. It’s a pleasure to welcome him to the “Retirement Rebel” tribe.
VLR is now a North American book, and I am very proud of that, knowing that it will help a lot of people figure this retirement thing out for themselves.
If you haven’t had a chance to check out the new edition of the book, there’s more information in the “About” section in the main menu of this site. You’ll also find a link to purchase the book on the home page and if you order one you will also receive a “retirement rebel” wristband our way of welcoming you to the tribe.
Website – New Look
Our website has also been redesigned but our message remains the same – to change the way our society thinks about and practices retirement. Our blog is for people who want to create a retirement for themselves that matters.
I’m excited about adding more voices to this worthy crusade to change our collective world view of retirement and I know you will enjoy Rob’s posts as he brings a lot of insight to the table based on real life retirement experiences from his wealth management practice. We might even add some contributors to the mix from time to time to ensure we cover all the key retirement bases.
At the end of April, Gerry and I will be launching our retirement coaching program to help people get off to a good start in retirement.
Some people will struggle with finding a way out of the retirement dip and hiring a coach will save a lot of time and help reduce stress. Change, especially lifestyle change isn’t easy. When you start to doubt yourself and waffle, a coach can offer a helping hand and get you through the rough patches. It’s a big plus to be able to turn to someone for perspective and advice, someone who has experienced first hand what you are going through, someone who can help point you in the right direction and hold you accountable.
Some advisors are buying into the idea that they need to adopt a more holistic approach and provide quality lifestyle planning assistance to their clients. Retirement planning, as it is done today, is inadequate. We are constantly being told that the more money we save for retirement, the better our retirement will be, which is simply wrong.
Financial Planning Fails Without Lifestyle Planning
I’m passionate about lifestyle planning because, like many others, I didn’t realize the importance it played in creating a satisfying retirement. I was very good at saving, but I never really knew what I was saving for. Trying to reach 70% of your pre-retirement income doesn’t really mean a lot when you don’t know what you plan to do with the rest of your life. How can you possibly know how much money you will need in retirement if you don’t know how much your retirement lifestyle will cost you? Do you even have an idea what that lifestyle will look like? Most don’t!
To help advisors who want to fill this important need for their clients we will be offering an abbreviated retirement coaching program. If you are interested in learning more, please contact us so we can discuss.
Future Book In The Works
We are currently working on converting our coaching ebook into a DIY VLR Transition guide, which will be released as a book in fall 2020.
If you have been following us on a regular basis you now know that VLR is a values-based approach to retirement-lifestyle design focusing on a person’s own unique wants and needs.
Financial security is a key ingredient, but just having a lot of money will not guarantee you a rich and rewarding retirement. Successful retirees just don’t have financial goals they also have lifestyle goals. Because they know how they want to live in retirement they use their money as a tool to support their values and priorities.
Having lots of money helps take the stress off, but actually doing something important and meaningful with it is what truly matters. Achieving financial independence allows you to pursue activities that will give your retirement a sense of meaning and purpose. Going on adventures, learning and experiencing new things, starting a new business, helping your grandchildren get a good education, whatever makes you feel good inside. It’s not about the money so much as what you plan on doing with it.
Since the original book was launched, we have talked to many people about retirement, and realized that most people unfortunately do not have a good handle on what they plan to do. In many cases, we discovered that they don’t want to retire, they just want to do something else, but they are unsure about what that something else is and how to get there.
Our mission is to have people look at retirement from a fresh perspective. We want them to enjoy a happy and fulfilling retirement and avoid a life filled with boredom and depression. We want them to break away from the status quo, traditional full-stop retirement, and think differently.
So yes, while it has been a very busy five years I’m happy with what we have accomplished and I’m also very excited about where we plan on going. I’ve been lucky to surround myself with some good people who are committed to spreading the VLR story and I know we are going to help a lot of people. I can honestly say my own VLR can’t get much better than that!
