Retirement Is A Game, Play It Well

Retirement is supposed to be fun, it should feel good or your doing something wrong. Personally I was far too serious starting out on my Victory Lap, and a mistake I made was not taking any time off. Right out of the gate I started working full bore on VLR which turned into two books and before I knew it three years of my retirement was gone, and I was forty pounds overweight. If you asked me if it was worth it I would definitely say yes but it came at a cost. Working part time at Bass Pro would have been so much easier but that would have meant missing out on my dream of creating my own business, and being my own boss, something that I always wanted to do. So I decided upon the hard way and through the process I’ve become very aware that too much seriousness is a kind of disease; it is a cancer of the soul and when your serious all the time you lose the fun. Thankfully I don’t spend any time feeling like that anymore. Continue reading “Retirement Is A Game, Play It Well”

What Does The Word Retirement Mean?

If you have seen any of our presentations you have heard the story of Mike being told by his publisher that he had written a book about “not retiring”. Despite using retirement in the title of the book, the reality is our language has not come up with word(s) that describe what is going on in the “retirement” world now. So here are some thoughts.

Summertime And Living Is Easy

Well warm weather has finally arrived in southern Ontario so we can finally start to think about summer, longer days, warmer nights, trips to the cottage and campfires. One of the joys of Victory Lap Retirement (VLR) is that you now have the time and the ability to decide how you will spend your time. To that end we have decided to cut back on our blogs until September, instead we will enjoy the warm weather, focus on our families, travel, and continue to work on building our small business. Celebrating Another Milestone

I have told this story before but I wanted to keep you up to date on what we are doing with our Presentation and Coaching business. We set a target date of April 1st to get our coaching guide into edit and guess what it’s there! We are excited knowing that it will help a lot of people figure out this retirement thing having been through the ringer ourselves but it will require a lot of polishing before it’s ready to release to our coaching clients. This will be our last book on the subject and will serve as the foundation for our coaching business so we want to take our time and do it right. After that is done we will add a couple of chapters to the guide and publish it as a DIY coaching guide hopefully by the end of this year. Continue reading “Celebrating Another Milestone”

Having Fun At The Zoomer Show

mosesjonmikeJonathan and I spent last weekend at the Toronto Zoomer Show, which gave us  the opportunity to talk to numerous people about our new book ‘Victory Lap Retirement.” As Ernie Zelinski my mentor likes to say “Books don’t sell themselves!”

The Zoomer show is Canada’s largest consumer and lifestyle event for men and women aged 45+. Visitors at the show receive the latest trends, advice and information on positive aging from more than 250 exhibitors such as Health and Wellness, Financial Planning, Caregiving, Fitness, Technology, Employment, Education, Pets, Volunteerism, Faith, Safety and Travel. There are celebrity speakers, fitness and health demonstrations and much more. One thing I really enjoyed was the strong line up of quality tribute bands, which included one doing songs of one my personal favourites “David Bowie”.

Introducing “Victory Lap Retirement Winners”

Victory Lap Retirement Lifesyle winner
Victory Lap Retirement Lifestyle winner

I’ve been meaning to blog about this for awhile but the book launch has kept me quite busy and to be honest I’m a little burned out at the moment. On the positive side I feel like Scrooge on Christmas morning, there are so many positive things going on in my life right now. That is what happens when you decide to take control of your life back and design a great lifestyle for yourself. But to be honest it’s not all roses all the time and one concern that I do have is watching out for my health. I’m not sleeping properly, there is way too much stuff on my mind and even though it’s all positive it concerns me.

I’ve begun a regular habit of checking my blood pressure whenever I’m at Shoppers and the readings are all over the place. While I’m no doctor, I’m pretty sure that it reflects the pace that I’m currently living at. The goal going forward will be to lower stress and slow the pace way, way down as I want to be around a long, long time!

Managing Time in Victory Lap Retirement

Clock FaceDuring my visits with my mother at her nursing home, I tend to observe and think a lot. After all these years, I smile when I see that she is still teaching me lessons about life. It was there that I realized that my own game clock was ticking down, two periods done with one to go and I was running out of time to do the things I still wanted to accomplish before it was game over. Time is fleeting and it is best to use it to your full advantage while you still can.
