Sometimes an event happens that give you a wake up call and causes you to take pause and evaluate what is happening in your lives. I had my own a couple of weeks ago. Continue reading “Like Scrooge On Christmas Morning”
Last month marked my three year anniversary for the start of my Victory Lap (VL). I thought it might be a good time as we head into 2018 to look at how it is going and maybe give you some thoughts on what I have learned, read and experienced in my VL so far. I’ve never used social media until recently and one of the biggest benefits I discovered is that it gives you a great opportunity to reconnect with old friends. I’m still a rookie at it but sometimes I find a name from the past appearing magically before me and that’s when the fun starts.
The picture is from a lunch I attended recently with some old banking friends of mine. We had lost contact over the years and it was wonderful to get together and relive old stories from the past. If this group ever got together and wrote a book on banking it would be a best seller for sure. Continue reading “101 Awesome Things #5 – Having Time To Hook Up With Old Friends”
I read the other day that Canada’s prosperity ranking has slipped to its lowest level in 11 years. Prosperity to me is a proxy for happiness and I’m not surprised by the findings at all. You can sense something is wrong whenever you venture outside, read or watch the news. Today a lot of people are stressed, unhappy and according to the index feel less convinced that working hard will get them ahead. They are beginning to lose hope and that is not a good thing. If that isn’t bad enough, the article goes on to say that Canadians over the last decade are struggling more with health concerns and the problem is only getting worst. The wonderful thing about being in your Victory Lap is that you can now work and help other people on your terms and if you have financial independence, even better, it does not have to be about the money. But be mindful and make sure it is mutually beneficial for you and the business. Continue reading “A Cautionary Tale”
Gerry and I were in Kitchener earlier this week giving an early morning talk on VLR and afterward we both went home to enjoy a quick little recovery nap. It was simply awesome being able to do this and it’s a shame that napping is frowned upon in our workaholic Western culture. Even the Contessa looks down upon it and associates it with being lazy so between just you and me I practice what I call “stealth napping” and it’s a beautiful thing. While on the George at some point I always start thinking about how many good years I have left. I’m sure this is triggered while thinking about Bill who at age 84 has been making the annual pilgrimage to the George for the past 35 years. One year I know his string of visits will be broken and the thought of going there and not seeing him saddens me but that unfortunately is how life works.

One of the keys to creating a fulfilling Victory Lap is being self-aware. Being aware of what is important to you will provide clarity for what matters to you and what makes you feel good. To accomplish this we need to understand our values and what motivates us.
Our values reflect what is important and guides how we need to live in order to be happy. If we can align our behaviours with our values we will enjoy an awesome VL. Pretty simple when you think about it. Continue reading “Victory Lap Retirement Is All About Values Based Living (Part 2 of 3)”
